Out beyond the fake lake (Bomun) for Christmas Day lunch at a place called the Healing Kitchen. It’s all farms and hilltops here. And roads to more farms and hilltops. Except for the noise from the cars, I could live out this way. Maybe tucked off in a corner there’s a valley that gets a lot of sun and none of the noise pollution.

This odd little three-way junction (above) hosts the restaurant and a mart. No gas station, but cigarettes, the staple of the 2nd and 3rd world, are available at this pitstop (below, left). I get the sense that this crevice is one of those places that isn’t really anywhere because it’s too busy being between all the action points. All signs point elsewhere—bitches and brews, anywhere but here (below, middle).

Looking another way (above, right), there’s hope for that farm in the hills. Mind the yield, farm boys. And those are beautiful, untouched by the hand of Korean development hills too (below, left and right). We speculate that those hills must surround the reservoir that feeds Gyeongju City its water which is why, for now at least, no one has been allowed to park a pension, hotel, spa, resort, condominium, GS Mart, Starbucks, Paris Baguette, or the other garbage that dominates every fake lake visit. For now …
