Day 496

Sunday | July 7th, 2013

Penalties in effect. No work yesterday means working all day today. No Meow yesterday means Meow today. Talking on the phone while sleeping and refusing to meet a returning Meow at the station means Meow angry whether I meet her at the station or not (which I did and made a new rule to meet her every time because that’ll be easier than meeting her just sometimes and she is usually saddled with crates of kimchi and other MIL food anyway).

The rest of the day was just manually chopping up audio files and cursing myself for not foreseeing the calamity I was in where I’d promised to deliver a product that couldn’t be delivered or … it could be if I was prepared to spend six to eight hours on it each day of testing in the lab. But that run contrary to the design of the new system, the one where I don’t generate busywork / bullshit feedback for students’ whose classroom and test performance I have no affect on because I’m not actually their teacher. Instead this needs to be the one where each teacher has access to minute or less files of each students’ answers on the test and can council them on how to get better and the students are perhaps (hopefully) more motivated to listen to their audio because the other eight minutes of static and gibberish have been striped out. But, clearly, I won’t be able to deliver such a system.

At least I got out for a little bit. Shot some pictures, lived a bit more of the vacation I’m technically on, but is filled up with this TOEIC nonsense. I spent another chunk of hours trying to come up with a system where the recording software and the fake test would start at the same time. If such a system could be put together, then auto-processing the files would be possible as the timings for each student’s test would be nearly identical … if.

Daily Report

I didn’t sleep last night. I struggled to write or create a script that would grab an .mp3 from a folder, open it, insert markers in pre-determined places, split the audio file into eleven segments based on those
