Day 245

Monday | October 29th, 2012

So today I was stuck in a free-form class with one student sporting a Mr. Whiper 4.2. I’ve never seen a Mr. Whiper 4.2, but am a big, big fan of Mr. Whiper 5. The last entry ever on was of a Mr. Whiper 5 demoed, then exploded. (Yeah, I know about the spelling / pronunciation differences.)

The Mr. Whiper 5 on is the same one I’ve had since 2003. I bought it at a stationery store in Ch’ilgok. It was the most expensive whiteout tool they had, but I instantly liked its fat marker shape as opposed to the flatter ones which you must hold like a measuring tape.

Mr. Whiper 5’s were for years made in Vietnam, another thing I liked. I bought another Mr. Whiper 5 the other day when Meow were downtown on our date eating, shopping, and cake designing. For some reason I couldn’t find any of mine (they’d all been magically transported to work since starting in March). I was disappointed that my new Mr. Whiper 5 was made in China and I imagined the hundreds of happy Vietnamese factory workers making Mr. Whiper 5s for a Japanese company for years suddenly finding themselves outsourced to China. I wondered what that factory was making now? What could be cooler than churning out Mr. Whipers?

At least the Chinese version of Mr. Whiper 5 still uses a metal bar and tube system to roll the whiteout tape across. As far as I can tell, the build quality is the same, too.
